The Capitalist Coffin
The Capitalist Coffin
LOOK 1
The Capitalist Coffin
Handmade in my family living room, using locally sourced materials
Before I even started the conception of this collection, there was one thing prominent in my head. The capitalist society we live in today and how it has now set such a strict limit on the art artists can create.
When making this collection, I kept thinking about the battle between art and commerce. The same thing @alexandermcqueen was thinking about until the end of his life. Last season, I took a huge risk doing my show. I put everything I had into it; financially, physically and emotionally.
I came out of it with a sense of purpose, but a huge burning hole in my pocket. Even if I wanted to, I could not afford to do it all over again. I felt trapped, that my life was limited to the confines of my credit card limit and rapidly decreasing credit score.
This look is inspired by all of that. The anger I felt towards modern life and the capitalist society we live in. The deep sadness I felt towards not being able to make my art on my terms.
It started with the base. I wanted to create a coffin that I would then add clothes on to. I wanted to show how I love fashion so much; sometimes, it feels like it’ll be the end of me. I wanted to show you that by designing clothes and executing my vision. I am simultaneously healing my inner child. Represented by tacking the clothes I wore as a kid to the back.
