16 hours… 2 days… 2 looks…

A few weeks ago I competed in the @rchive.ca RE-DONE competition. Where I had two 8 hour days to make two complete looks out of recycled clothes, inspired by the theme “Yin Yang”. This is what I made.😘

Yin - Black (Masc Presenting Look)

Yin is associated with evil and darkness. The first thing I think about is toxic masculinity and people driven by ego and power. I wanted to lean into making the masc look about looking evil. Embodying the word raw: raw flesh, raw hems, raw denim.

Using a black knit sweater, I cropped it, cut slits into it and stretched it so it would droop and curve like your ribs do. Underneath, I wanted it to look like there was no flesh on your bones. I turned a red hoodie into a tank top with the saying “Ladies and Gentlemen. Rock and Roll” now accross the chest. A poke at how brands will often add things to their clothes just to make them look “cooler”. Complete with a pair of jeans that are two pairs of jeans combined. They spiral down your leg and then flare out at the bottom.

Yang - White (Femme Presenting Look)

Yang is associated with good and light. I naturally wanted to make this look for the femme model. The masc look is about evil; I wanted to make this about being an angel. Of course, featuring white. I thought to myself, “How do we make an outfit out of recycled clothes, that looks like you're going to a streetwear party in heaven?”

Using three oversized grey hoodies. I cropped one and turned it into a jacket. With two hoodies left. I cut off one of the hoods and all four sleeves and attached it to the base hoodie jacket. Creating a double hood and stacked sleeves. Then taking the ribbing on the bottom of the hoodie and re-attaching it to the jacket. Underneath is a men’s tank top, now turned into a draped halter top. With a few stitches and some styling. It appears to be a women’s top. Complete with a skirt made up of 3 long sleeve shirts sewn together, using the necklines as a waistband and labels exposed.
